Free Exterior Tours, Oct 07
The Chief Post Office tours took place in October 2007 and then again in December 2007, outside the Chief Post Office
building in Dunedin, New Zealand. The Chief Post Office was opened in 1937 as part of the socially oriented reforms
of the Labour government in New Zealand following the Great Depression, and was rendered redundant after the
neo-liberal reforms of the Labour government in 1986 (See "Of Two Buildings and the Space Between"
Scope magazine 2008), the building was vacated and gutted in 1998 following a failed deal with the Dunedin City
Council.
I stood outside the building in four hour shifts, on 5 different days, offering free tours to passers by.
The tours were semi improvised historical tours around the outside of the building. I described the history of
particular architectural features of the building especially the stone cladding which was replaced in the early 1980's
by an artificial composite material.
