resonant object A 3.5 metre waste container suspended from the ceiling of the space was made to resonate at its natural frequency using a contact microphone (such as is used to amplify a piano) attached to the rear side of the container and a 150 watt speaker. The signal from the microphone was filtered to amplify the signal at the resonant frequency (around 70 hertz). The object could only fully resonate for brief periods as the resulting vibration of the 300 Kg container was transmitted directly into a load bearing beam which appeared unsafe.
